We’ve just released our third issue of FlyStream magazine. It opens with ‘Scientific Angling’, a scientist’s take on trout fishing. Aquaculture graduate, guide and competition angler Stewart Dick considers things as diverse as bell curves, thermoclines and lateral lines when assessing how best to catch a trout on a fly. I doubt there’s a trout fisher out there who won’t learn something from this story, regardless of experience.
Anthony McGrath has a healthy obsession (give or take the odd late start at work!) with Ballarat’s showpiece lake and ‘A Year on Wendouree’ tells you all you need to know about this productive but enigmatic fishery. And Steve Dunn continues the lake theme when he rugs up and braves winter on lakes Tantangara and Eucumbene in the Snowy Mountains – with some impressive results.
Andrew Fuller travels to the exotic jungles of central America and tests the limits of conventional fly gear on giant tarpon – just as well he owns a tackle shop! I stay a little closer to home and explore the wonderful bream fishing to found along Victoria’s south-west coast.
To the columnists and Craig Coltman has picked the Green Machine for his winter fly tying piece. I can vouch for this fly – it was my most successful pattern at Tantangara a few days ago. Meanwhile Jim Allen’s columns are a highlight as they come across my desk each quarter. Jim is uniquely placed to offer a mix of flyfishing history and current advice, and this issue, his reflections on polaroiding are fascinating. Peter Hayes can’t quite match it with Jim for hours on the water – yet! However he is one of the most systematic and driven anglers I know and his stream fishing advice, inspired by the tougher conditions of the last season or so, is essential reading for anyone who’s serious about being a better stream fisher. Finally, on the gear front, Andrew Fuller and I look at soft action rods, portable watercraft and a new fly line.
