We’ve just released our third issue of FlyStream magazine. It opens with ‘Scientific Angling’, a scientist’s take on trout fishing. Aquaculture graduate, guide and competition angler Stewart Dick considers things as diverse as bell curves, thermoclines and lateral lines when assessing how best to catch a trout on a fly. I doubt there’s a trout fisher out there who won’t learn something from this story, regardless of experience.

Meanwhile Jim Allen’s columns are a highlight as they come across my desk each quarter. Jim is uniquely placed to offer a mix of flyfishing history and current advice, and this issue, his reflections on polaroiding are fascinating. Peter Hayes can’t quite match it with Jim for hours on the water – yet! However he is one of the most systematic and driven anglers I know and his stream fishing advice, inspired by the tougher conditions of the last season or so, is essential reading for anyone who’s serious about being a better stream fisher. Finally, on the gear front, Andrew Fuller and I look at soft action rods, portable watercraft and a new fly line.
